With the proper organization, it takes little more than innovative, passionate people to  create an event that is meant to inspire, and that is what Startup Weekends are: an attempt to inspire and encourage creativity over the course of a 54-hour gathering of visionaries, entrepreneurs, developers, designers, marketers, and managers. Since the first Startup Weekend in 2007, the event has been held around the world and Alexandria held its first Startup Weekend from the 22nd to the 24th of September. For three days, the Arab Academy of Science and Technology acted as a host to an amazing event that brimmed with productivity, creativity, and the joy of sharing; we were lucky enough to be at the center.

At eSpace, we have long believed that it is important to give back to the community that has helped us grow, and one of the best ways to do that is to ensure that the tech community in Egypt is never in need of encouragement. As such, we found it important to sponsor this event and help other ambitious people have the chance to realize their potential in a society that is in dire need of local success stories. We had also decided to provide technological consultation to five select winners, in the hope that by giving them a hand, we will be helping them overcome any technological issue in the future. By the end of the three days, startups Qrasher, Beysee3 bel 3arabeya, Been Green, Baddel, and Club7app were the lucky winners.

But much like the Weekend is about the people, eSpace's story is about the people; eSpacians have been a part of almost every aspect of the event. From organizing, to participating, to winning, eSpace was able to show its true colors at the event. Hashem Zahran, Ahmed Bakr, Nermine Ahmed, Kareem Hashem, and Rofaida Awad were organizers, part of a team that managed to bring the event to life and helped make it such a success. Hamdy Khalil, eSpace's CTO, also acted as a Mentor during the event.

1st prize winner

When it comes to participating, over 15 eSpacians were in attendance during the event, but more importantly, eSpacians also nabbed the top-notch prizes. Two eSpace teams were official SWAlex winners: Mahmoud Said and Alfred Nagy took third place with their project AsTweeted, which aims to archive tweets, and Sara Galal, Mohammad Badrah, Nermine Ahmed, Basayel Mohamed and Wael Shaban took first place with Sweet Heaven, an online reward system for children from parents. Furthermore, Heba Hosny, from our QA team, was the Tahrir2 winner with her project 7alawa7da, which aims to raise money for one medical case at a time. The sheer amount of success that eSpacians achieved during the event goes to show that we are lucky to have such an incredible team.

The first SWAlex has come to an end, but we will be waiting for the next one. Any chance that allows us to inspire and be inspired is a chance we cherish. Today, we could not be happier to be eSpacians and we could not, by any means, be more proud of the team we have.
