Because We Know That Open Source Matters
1
From the 1st to the 15th of September, The Faculty of Engineering at Alexandria University stands witness to a celebration and acknowledgement of the virtues of Free Open Source Software (FOSS) as the University works its way towards the Software Freedom Day . The tribute that was established in 2004 now has over a thousand following teams in over 90 countries across the globe and is sponsored by some of the biggest names in software and web development.
Over the years, eSpace has continously renewed its vow to support FOSS and this year is no different. This year eSpace's Marketing Manager, Hamdy Khalil, and our Solutions Team Leader, Ahmed Mekkway, were both speakers on the first day of the tribute. eSpace's Hamdy Khalil was the keynote speaker of the opening day, and as such his talk was at the very heart of the matter as he talked about FOSS, its history, how it's different from proprietorial software, using several case studies to clarify the points. Ahmed Mekkway followed Hamdy's talk with one entitled "Free Software", in which he further introduced the idea of software freedom, explaining the four main freedoms and discussing copyright issues.
NB: Software Freedom Day takes place on the third Saturday of September, but due to the fact that this will coincide with the national holiday observing Eid ul-Fitr, the event will be celebrated before then to ensure a larger rate of attendance.
