Agile Vs CMM
0
The main difference between the Agile and the CMM process models, from my viewpoint, is that CMM, or traditional waterfall process model, is more suitable for sensitive, large-scale projects that take more than 6 months to be delivered. Agile, on the other hand, is more suitable for small-scale projects.
Recently I discussed this subject with some other professional testers and I got some replies that I want to share with you; note that you'll find their replies in Italic.
"I have been working in a team of 80+ people for about two years and my experience so far has been as good as smaller agile teams."
I was quite surprised with the below comment because I was expecting the total opposite:
"When you hear in the news of a huge mega-project failing - maybe losing hundreds of millions of dollars - you can generally correlate the failure to the length of its initial 'requirements gathering phase'. The longer you run that phase, the higher your chances of delivering features that don't get used; live code should help requirement gathering."
So we have to gather requirements in tiny batches before each iteration.
"It’s OK to use waterfall for projects that have frozen requirements for no less than 12 months, but most commercial projects can't function in this manner"
"You can check NASA for Spaces researches; you will find them as a very critical software dev space. And guess what? They are adopting Agile."
Collecting requirements in tiny batches may not suit projects that require stable interface - large pieces of code have to fit together to fit this interface. This code may exceed 1 MLOC, but there's another viewpoint to keep in mind:
"Collecting requirements in tiny batches will cause too much change in terms of interfaces and databases and too much change means the chance of having compatible versions of the system will become less and less likely."
