Unless you’ve been living on Mars for the last couple of years, you already
know about the Google’s video sharing
service, YouTube, that lets you upload,
search, play, comment and rate videos for free. YouTube also has released some
APIs that let you embed and play videos from your website.

Recently, YouTube has
announced
more open APIs that will allow developers to upload, manage,
search and play videos and access video metadata like user comments, favorites
and ratings.

Before these new APIs, you could easily embed YouTube videos in your website
but users could just as easily leave your site because the player would display
links to other videos that may even be unrelated to your content.

Now, websites are able to build and play their own collections of videos
that are stored on and streamed through YouTube without paying any extra fees.
Moreover, they enable you to customize the look and feel of the player and
control playback.

Client authentication will be available using either one of two methods according
to Stephanie Liu
: AuthSub
for web applications, or ClientLogin
for applications installed on devices.

Jim Patterson, YouTube product manager, describes the new APIs as:
"Just a geeky acronym for Awesomely Powerful Interactions, which is what users
are now capable of performing from just about anywhere."

For more information, you can see some case studies
or get started now. "The possibilities
are endless", says Jim Patterson.
