Redmine: A Software Project Management Solution
7
As a software and web developer, I am always interested in tools that help
developers and ease the overall project management process.
For long time, I have searched for the best application that I can trust and
use as my all-in-one solution for project management and issue tracking. I have
seen many applications that claimed to be the best, downloaded many free tools
and signed up for many trial accounts. Examples include EasyProjects.NET, Trac, XPlanner,
Bugzilla, Mingle, Basecamp, and Goplan.
Finally, I found the solution that I’m extremely impressed with. Redmine is a flexible project management and
issue tracking web application that is created by Jean
Philippe Lang and is released under the GPL. Written using the Ruby on Rails framework, it is
cross-platform and cross-database solution.
Features include role based access control, SVN integration, LDAP support,
Gantt charts, wikis, forums, time tracking, calendars, file management and self
registration. The thing I like the most about it is the integration between
multiple projects so you can manage them all as one project. And, of course,
it’s free.
Moreover, Redmine provides support for plugins that
can be easily installed to add even more functionalities like integrating Google Calendar.
For real projects, I highly recommend using Redmine
and forget the hassle of maintaining multiple systems for project management,
issue tracking and version control.
